Elegy in stone, Hamlet and Station 11 all explore grief in its many forms. Elegy in stone explores the the importance of remembering grief, which is often pushed aside by many peoples busy lives. Elegy In Stone highlights the sacrifices made during the second world war that no doubt has caused grief to millions of people world wide. Elegy in Stone connects the world through grief; Station 11 and Hamlet both have a connection to a more intimate grief. In the case of Hamlet, he struggles to deal with the death of his father, a personal loss that mostly affects Hamlet. Everyone else in the play has seemingly been unfazed by the king's death."But I have that within which passeth show,"(1.2.85) Hamlet says this because his grief for his father is a deeper more authentic grief  compared to his mothers short lived grief. Sadly, Hamlets attempt to resolve his grief ends up creating more grief for him in the end. Lastly Station 11 talks about a lonely group of  people trying to overcome their grief by putting on performances in towns across America. The symphony battles grief, refusing to just survive in an otherwise depressing world;"Because Survival Is Insufficient". Many of the other survivors are suppressed because they do not want to let go of  a past that seems like a fantasy to them and are not able to accept the new world. In station 11, the main protagonist, Arthur Leader also deals with grief due to the fact he lost everyone close to him, he never overcomes his grief, struggling to deal with it his whole life. Unlike Arthur, the symphony and its members experienced a different kind of loss, they had to deal with the loss of civilization but they managed to make peace with their grief.  The symphony learned to live with the loss of civilization winning the battle against grief. The symphony and many survivors in Station 11 fought back against grief just like Hamlet and many Canadians. This makes grief a prevalent theme because all of the mentioned texts dealt with a great loss that in turn introduced grief into their emotional world. All three of the parties had to deal with an unfathomable amount of loss and the new challenges grief created for them. They all tried to overcome a great deal of emotions while sharing the similar struggles that come with facing loss. Eventually, many survivors in Station 11 and Hamlet fell prey to the grief , especially when compared to the brave Canadian soldiers that triumphed against grief and fear; inspiring everyone much like the traveling symphony in station 11 did with their performances.

Hey Josh, I think the three texts you chose to connect where great examples to represent the theme of grief. I really enjoyed the different outlook of how you chose to connect grief as a theme rather than just the more common theme of death. I think that grief is something that is very important for someone to go through when they have lost someone as it is unhealthy habit to try to avoid mourning. It was interesting to read about how you connected each text and really emphasized about who died in each story and who was also affected. The ending comparison as well was also very insightful, as I agree that many people have different levels of grieving…

My purpose

Open Books

My name is Joshua Lisi. I was born in 2001 and currently attend St. Augustine CHS. Ever since I was a young kid I had a passion for abstract ideas that lead to a fascination with science. I also enjoy spending my time playing sports. Above all I love music and its boundary breaking effect. For years, I have served as a useful source to those seeking insight, help, or advice. I finally decided to own that role and be intentional about it. I hope writing about my passions and my thoughts on our world and its connections to books i've read provides valuable perspective. I founded Literacy blood to give others a taste of what goes on in my mind, and share my raw unfiltered opinion.

Take some time to explore the blog, read something interesting, and feel free to reach out.
