In The Death Of A Salesman we are introduced to a character called Willy Loman. During his older age Willy began experience symptoms of dementia but unfortunately the play takes place during an era of ignorance. Today as a society we have come a long way compared to the 1950s when it was looked down upon to dance on tv(Elvis Presley), let alone talk about mental illness. Today's society is still flawed and has been a battle to overcome flawed social norms. The fight is not over because there is still a large part of the population that refuses to change for the good of society. The answer to this problem is making sure everybody today is supported as an individual. We rarely take the time to support others, we are often too focused on ourselves or fail to communicate properly coming off aggressive. Yelling at someone eliminates a chance at having a prosperous conversation on things like mental illness because the conversation turns into an attack. A perfect example of this is the Loman family, every time Biff sees Willy acting strangely Biff gets mad at Willy and they argue due to the fact Biff doesn't understanding Willy's mental condition. In today's world people still struggle with mental illness because do not understand something as complex as depression and fail to take it seriously. Todays depression rates continue to climb, this year alone 1 and 5 Canadians will experience mental illness. Proving in today's world as a society we are still struggling to understand and overcome the same mental illness that has impacted many families like the Loman's.
